The facts about gender-based violence:

  • In 2022, 184 women and girls were violently killed in Canada, primarily by men. One woman or girl is killed every 48 hours.
  • Indigenous women are killed at nearly seven times the rate of non-Indigenous women.
  • Women with disabilities, young women, immigrant women, lesbian and bisexual women, and trans women all face higher than average rates of gender-based violence.
  • There has been an increase in femicide in the last few years: in 2020, 160 women and girls were killed by violence, in 2021, it increased to 173 and in 2022, to 184.

While this is a time for remembering the lives lost to violence, it is also a time to act. CEIU encourages all of our members to participate in our #CEIU16Days of activism. It is through our activism that we are able to demand action from the government and we must continue to organize to put an end to gender-based violence.
